About Me
Welcome! My name is Barb Phillips. If you are a regular to this site, you know it is always under development. That is because I am always growing, learning and sharing what I’ve learned with others. This site was created out of my vision to combine two of my professional passions: writing and personal development coaching.
I’ve been writing professionally for over ten years, and have authored hundreds of articles on a wide range of topics including motivation, success, career development, emotional well-being, health & wellness and parenting.
I have also taught personal development and career development workshops at Pellissippi College, the public library and for a training company.
I received my coaching certification through Fowler Wainwright (and my unofficial certification through life itself – I can’t discount my 48 years of experience!). My undergraduate degree is from Indiana University.
My personal mission statement is:
To create a loving environment for all people to connect to their spiritual selves, and ignite a personal vision for a fulfilling life.
A mission statement is the foundation that a vision statement is created from.
“About Me” pages can feel very staged. I think that’s because we don’t want to look stupid so we end up writing stuff that doesn’t even sound like the “real” us.
At first I wrote this page in third person, then I read it and thought, “why did I do that?” I like to live authentically.
So, just for fun, and because I have an odd sense of humor (what is life without laughter?), I’m going to write the first five things that come to my mind “about me” and see what happens. This is to share that I’m just a real person continually striving to make sense out of this fabulous life.
So, here are the first five things:
1. When I get my 11-year-old daughter ready to go to school in the morning, I throw out lots of threats like, “If you don’t get ready on time tomorrow, I’m taking $2.00 out of your allowance for the wear and tear on my voice caused by begging you to get ready.” I feel like I mean it when I say it, but I never follow through with any of the threats. So far, my voice still works fine.
2. Sometimes I make annoying sounds around my husband just to see how long it will take for it to get on his nerves. Or maybe it’s just because I’m trying to steal a little more of his attention (he’s a handsome guy!). This reminds me of when I first had a crush on him and he didn’t notice me so I stuck my foot out as he walked by to trip him. It worked. I don’t think he reads my website. Living with the real thing is enough, so I’m going to see how long it takes him to find this out.
3. My oldest daughter left her cute shoes at my house during a visit, and I like them so much that I hide them whenever she comes back to visit.
4. I was rescued after my second breast cancer diagnosis and treatment by a dachsie mix from the animal shelter. I am grateful to have a third chance at life. I thank God for every day I get to breathe, and I take deep breaths every day just because I can — living in remission does that to a person.
5. People love my taco dip and it is so simple. I think people love simple.
That’s all about me! I’m aspiring to a new level of personal development and I hope you’ll join me. We can make a difference in our futures. Let’s live our dreams, our passions and our lives happily!
I’d like to share my coaching programs.
